Luxembourg plans to join NATO's PURL program, buying arms from the United States for further transfer to Ukraine.
This was announced on Tuesday, September 2, by Prime Minister Luc Frieden during a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, according to "Ukrinform".
"We will finance a package of already available weapons, mostly US-made, to be transferred to Ukraine - together with other countries we have yet to identify," Frieden said. He added that partner countries will be identified in the coming weeks.
The prime minister said the cost of each PURL package is about $500 million, so smaller nations are looking for partners for joint procurement.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte recalled that within a few weeks, Alliance countries have already raised $2 billion to buy critical weapons for Ukraine.
The PURL packages include anti-aircraft systems and ammunition, mostly of a defense nature.
On August 4, Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmygal said that the United States and the North Atlantic Alliance are launching a new mechanism to support Ukraine - the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative.
Thanks to this mechanism, NATO member states and partners will be able to finance supplies of U.S. weapons and technologies through voluntary contributions.
The minister said that new aid packages will be announced on a regular basis. NATO will coordinate deliveries within the framework of this mechanism, including through already existing channels (NATO Security Assistance and Training to Ukraine - NSATU).
