The Star Of The Movie *Basic Instinct* Talked About How His Belarusian Grandfather’s Personality Influenced His Life
MICHAEL DOUGLAS

Michael Douglas has published his memoir.

82-year-old Hollywood star Michael Douglas has published his memoir, *A Damn Exciting Ride*, in which he candidly discusses his personal life, according to Daily Mail.

The book details the deep-seated insecurity instilled in him by his legendary father—the star of *Spartacus* Kirk Douglas, in whose shadow he spent six decades of his career trying to break free. Douglas Jr. certainly succeeded—if only because he won the Oscars that his father never did. One in 1976 for co-producing the multi-Oscar-winning film *One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest*, and a second in 1988 for Best Actor—for his portrayal of the ruthless financier Gordon Gekko in *Wall Street*.

Michael’s mother, actress Diana Dill, grew tired of Kirk’s repeated infidelities and divorced him when their eldest son was six years old. Kirk, according to Douglas, “inherited his father’s explosive temper <…> if we misbehaved, he would beat us.” Douglas adds that he was “emotionally closed off from an early age, hiding behind a shell of steel” and had been afraid of his father his entire life. Although Kirk tried to steer Michael toward a career in law, telling him that “film production is the saddest profession in the world,” Michael followed in his father’s footsteps and became an actor.

It’s worth noting that the actor’s grandfather was Gershl Danielovich (1884–1954). He was born in Chausy, Mogilev Region, and in 1910 he emigrated to the United States with his wife. There, in 1916, his son Iser Danielovich (known as Kirk Douglas) was born, and Kirk Douglas later had a son named Michael Douglas.
