Another European Union project will be an orbital reconnaissance system.

European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius, speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum, stated that the EU intends to deploy its own secure satellite communications system, IRIS², or the “European Starlink,” by 2029.

According to Kubilius, the European Union is taking into account the risks of being cut off from U.S. military systems.

“The EU must very quickly—as early as 2029—launch the first phase of the IRIS² system, the ‘European Starlink,’ which is a secure satellite communications system,” the European Commissioner said.

The second project will be an orbital reconnaissance system, he added. Satellites located in different orbits will monitor the Earth’s surface.
