The U.S. president drew a parallel with China.
U.S. President Donald Trump chose to cautiously comment on a possible plague outbreak in Russia, but acknowledged a lack of information from the Russian side regarding the incident.
During a press briefing at the White House, journalists asked the U.S. leader whether the alleged plague outbreak in Russia could be a biological weapon being developed by the authorities, drawing a parallel with the origins of COVID-19 in Wuhan.
Trump responded by pointing to statements from Moscow, which claims that “the situation is under control.” At the same time, the U.S. president agreed that the Russian side had provided little information about the incident.
“China said very little back then, and Russia is saying very little now. But they claim the situation is completely under control,” said the head of the Oval Office.
These questions were raised following the death of an employee at a Siberian research institute dedicated to combating the plague. While Russian officials claim she died of pneumonia of unknown origin, international health authorities continue to closely monitor the situation.
