The hangover will be really bad.
Every day brings a new calamity, and the sheer daily occurrence of the catastrophe does not diminish its horror. The mass murder of Ukrainians, the repression of Russians…
Cannibalism in its purest form.
The Russian twentieth century was also cannibalism, but the catastrophe of the past was at least ideological; it was a blinding by a great hypnosis. That doesn’t make it any easier, of course, but at least it’s explainable: the builders of the foundation pit stepped into the abyss in pursuit of a bright future…
But today’s Russia, plunging headlong into tomorrow’s abyss for absolutely no damn reason, out of thieving folly, in some kind of suicidal ecstasy over its own unpunished recklessness today—this, of course, is some new twist in the plot.
Leo Tolstoy is of no help here—only Dostoevsky…
They’ve really gone too far this time.
The hangover will be very rough—but first we have to survive to see it…
