He ran for office as a candidate of a center-left party.
Hitler Mussolini Simeón Flores won by a margin of 25 votes in Keropalca, a district with just over 730 residents in the department of Huánuco, running as a candidate for the center-left party “Aora Nación.” He is not the first person named Hitler to be elected in Peru.
A Peruvian named Hitler Mussolini was elected mayor of a small Andean district after winning the local election by a narrow margin as a candidate for a left-wing party, reports Euronews.
Hitler Mussolini Simeon Flores, 45, won the race for mayor of Queropaca, a district in the Lauricocha province of the Huánuco department, north of Lima, running for the center-left party “Ahora Nación.”
He received 229 votes—34.5% of the 663 valid ballots cast in Keropalka—beating his closest rival, Gaspar Benilde Osorio Zambrano of the “Popular Renewal Peru” party, who received 204 votes, or 30.8%.
According to official data for 2024, the district’s population is estimated at just over 730 people.
Simeon Flores also heads the Simeon Sac investment group in Pilco Marka, in the same department.
The vote took place as part of regional and municipal elections across Peru following the victory of the far-right Keiko Sofia Fujimori in the country’s presidential election.
This is not the first time voters in this South American country have voted for someone named Hitler.
Hitler Alba , a representative of the center-right party “We Are Peru” , served as mayor of another small Andean town, Yungar, from 2011 to 2014.
In 2018, he ran against Lenin Vladimir Rodríguez Valverde, who attempted to challenge the legality of his nomination. Alba defeated the other candidates, winning 47.7% of the vote.
Calling himself a “good Hitler,” Alba ran his campaign under the slogans “Hitler is back” and “Hitler with the people.”
He claimed at the time that his father was unaware of the legacy of Germany’s Nazi dictator when he chose his name.
Hitler Saavedra, a congressman and surgeon, served in the Peruvian Congress as a member of the “We Are Peru” party from 2021 until his death in 2024 at the age of 46.
It is not uncommon for Peruvians to choose historical or simply unusual names for their children, disregarding any negative or controversial connotations.
