The War In Ukraine Has Triggered The Reverse Evolution Of Dogs

Former pets are increasingly resembling wild animals.

The war in Ukraine has triggered the reverse evolution of dogs, writes The New York Times. Researchers found that exposure to the conflict over a short period of time turned former pets into animals that more closely resemble wild ones.

The experts collected data on 763 dogs from nine regions of Ukraine.

"On the front lines, dogs with signs of a 'wild' phenotype are indeed more likely to survive: standing ears, straight tails, less white in color," the study said.

His co-author, Malgorzata Witek, a doctoral student at the University of Gdansk in Poland, added that "war acts as a powerful filter": that is, it promotes traits that increase survival in extreme conditions.
