Tehran proposes to postpone nuclear talks to a later date.
Iran has handed the United States a new peace plan that envisions opening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the war, Axios reported, citing a U.S. official and two other sources. At the same time, Tehran is offering to postpone nuclear talks to a later date.
According to Axios, the proposal, which Iran has conveyed to the US through Pakistani mediators, is aimed at resolving the crisis over the Strait of Hormuz and the US blockade.
Tehran proposes that Washington extend the ceasefire for a long period of time or reach a final end to the war, and that negotiations on the nuclear program begin after the opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the blockade.
According to the publication, the White House has received the proposal, but it is not yet known whether the US is ready to consider it.
"These are delicate diplomatic negotiations and the US does not conduct them through the press. As the president noted, the U.S. has all the trump cards and will only make a deal if the interests of the American people come first and will never allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons," said White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales.
Lifting the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and ending the war would remove U.S. President Donald Trump's leverage in any future negotiations over two major U.S. military objectives: eliminating Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium and getting Iran to suspend enrichment.
