Trump Decides To Slap Duties On Scotch Whisky After Visit From Britain's King
Donald Trump

The reaction at Buckingham Palace has become known.

U.S. President Donald Trump says he has slapped some duties on whiskey following a visit by Britain's King King Charles III, a major trade concession for London.

This is reported by Bloomberg.

"I will remove tariffs and restrictions on whiskey related to Scotland's ability to cooperate with the Commonwealth of Kentucky in the production of whiskey and bourbon, two very important industries in Scotland and Kentucky," Trump wrote on social media.

Although details are still unknown, the president later said during an interaction with reporters that he had already lifted "all restrictions so Scotland and Kentucky can cooperate again." Trump stressed that he did so "in honor of the King and Queen who have just left."

Buckingham Palace has already responded and said that King Charles III has been informed of President Trump's "warm gesture and thanks him for the decision" that will significantly impact "the British whisky industry and the livelihoods it provides." To clarify, Scotland is part of the United Kingdom.

"His Majesty will raise a glass to the attentiveness and generous hospitality of the President as he leaves the United States after a very enjoyable state visit that their majesties have spent together in this special Jubilee year," Buckingham Palace added.

As Bloomberg writes, duties on Scotch whisky have become one of the main points of contention between the U.S. and Britain.

The U.K. has previously argued that lifting the duties would benefit the U.S. bourbon industry because it exports used barrels to Scotch whisky makers. And it was this trade exchange that was referred to on social media.

The move is a victory for London as it seeks to reaffirm the "special relationship" at a time when ties between the US and Britain have fallen to one of their lowest levels in decades.

According to the Scotch Whisky Association, Scotland shipped nearly $1 billion worth of Scotch whisky to the US in 2025, its most valuable export market.
