The illusion of Iranian leadership cohesion is being dispelled.
There is a heated debate within the regime about the next steps towards the US. According to Iran International, in a secret letter to Supreme Leader Mojtab Khamenei, senior politicians say: Iran should negotiate with the Americans over its nuclear program, writes Bild.
Part of the leadership believes negotiations are necessary to stabilize the situation. Others, by contrast, see even discussing the nuclear issue as a clear violation of "red lines" - since Khamenei is said to have instructed that it should not be discussed with Washington.
Some leading Iranian politicians signed the letter, while others refused.
The signatories include President Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
Their opponents, such as diplomat Ali Bagheri Kani, are said to have even purposely circulated the letter.
A parallel dispute over the ongoing negotiations has escalated. Hardliners accuse the negotiating team of deliberately breaking the leadership line. Some, like the deputy head of the National Security Commission, Mahmoud Nabavian, openly refer to the talks as a "strategic mistake."
At the same time, the Iranian leadership is trying to hide the internal conflict. Several senior politicians have circulated nearly identical statements. Ghalibaf stated, "There are no hardliners or moderates in Iran. We are all Iranians and revolutionaries." President Pezeshkian also emphasized unity with similar words.
It is this very demonstrative cohesion, however, that now looks untrustworthy. The leaked letter reveals - behind the scenes, a fundamental conflict is unfolding.
