The Kremlin promises Yerevan a "Ukrainian scenario".
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has criticized Armenia, warning Yerevan of the "inadmissibility" of a European integration course without the Kremlin's approval.
He said this during a press conference on May 9, Charter97.org reported, citing the Russian media.
The Kremlin chief claims that such a policy could lead to a scenario similar to the events in Ukraine in 2014, meaning a Russian armed invasion.
In his opinion, Armenia should take into account Moscow's position on European integration, so Putin believes it is advisable to hold a referendum. The Kremlin chief also said that such a decision would be right both for the citizens of Armenia and for the "main economic partner" - Russia.
"In my opinion, it would be right both for the population, citizens of Armenia, and for us, as the main economic partner, to decide as early as possible, for example, to hold a referendum," Putin said.
At the same time, he added that although it is "none of our business", but in principle it would be logical to hold a referendum and ask Armenian citizens what their choice would be.
"Accordingly, we would make appropriate conclusions and follow the path of a soft, intelligent and mutually beneficial divorce," the dictator said.
At the same time, he warned of possible consequences in case of a different development of events, drawing a parallel with Ukraine.
"We are now experiencing everything that is happening in the Ukrainian direction. And where did it start? With Ukraine's accession or attempted accession to the EU," Putin said and emphasized that all this led later to "the coup d'état, the Crimean story, the position of southeastern Ukraine and hostilities."
