It must counter threats from Russia and China.

The United States conducted the first test of the new multi-layered missile defense system, “Golden Dome,” in the state of New Mexico. This was announced on Wednesday, June 24, on social media by U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegset. “Today, the first historic test of the Golden Dome for America (GDA) system was a complete success—and it was a great honor for me to witness this event,” he said. “With the help of the Golden Dome, the Department of War will defend our homeland more effectively than ever before,” Hegset noted.

On January 7, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order mandating the creation of a missile defense system. It is designed to counter threats from Russia and China and involves placing hundreds of satellites in near-Earth orbit to detect and destroy enemy missiles during the launch phase of their trajectory. Analysts compare the idea to the Strategic Defense Initiative proposed by U.S. President Ronald Reagan in 1983, and the name was inspired by Israel’s “Iron Dome” missile defense system.

The White House has estimated the preliminary cost of the project at $175 billion. However, the U.S. Congressional Budget Office believes that the project will take 20 years to complete and cost at least $500 billion.
