Fighting on some parts of the front continues.
The Russian occupation forces have not been able to achieve a single significant operational breakthrough on the front during the past year. At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces stepped up their successes in winter and spring. This is according to a report by the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
It is noted that even during the Russian-declared "ceasefire" from May 9 to 11, fighting continued on some parts of the front, but the overall pace of operations slightly decreased.
Analysts say that the ceasefire regime actually had no clearly defined mechanisms for monitoring and implementation. The only publicly stated condition was Ukraine's refusal to strike Moscow during the May 9 parade, which Kiev stuck to.
"The prevalence of mutual recriminations and the continuation of localized activity from the first hours after the ceasefire was declared underscores the fact that a ceasefire without clear enforcement mechanisms is unlikely to be respected," the report said.
How Russia used the "ceasefire"
The ISW believes Russian forces may have used the pause to rotate, move reserves and logistics to prepare for further offensives.
At the same time, Ukrainian defenses continue to hold back the Russian offensive and prevent the Kremlin from achieving results that Moscow could present as major victories by May 9.
The analysts also note that since October 2025, Russian forces have failed to make a significant advance near Konstantinovka, one of the key areas of Ukraine's fortification belt.
Ukrainian Forces' Successes on the Front
At the same time, the report says that Ukrainian forces have achieved their greatest successes on the battlefield since the operation in Russia's Kursk region in August 2024.
"The Ukrainian Armed Forces liberated a significant part of Kupyansk in the fall of 2025, and regained more than 400 square kilometers of territory in southern Ukraine as a result of counterattacks in the winter and spring of 2026. In addition, in late April, the Ukrainian military liberated several settlements in the western part of Zaporizhzhya region," the analysts summarized.
What the Russians are doing during the "ceasefire"
The press secretary of the Joint Forces Group Viktor Tregubov said that the Russian occupiers are trying to take advantage of the temporary pause in fighting to strengthen their positions and restore their offensive potential.
He also stressed that the Ukrainian Defense Forces are also using this time to improve logistics and conduct their own rotations.
