Berlin is even willing to overpay.
Germany has renewed efforts to purchase Tomahawk cruise missiles from the United States after the Pentagon dropped plans to station a U.S. battalion equipped with the weapon in Germany.
According to Financial Times, the German government is hoping to persuade the Trump administration to agree to sell Tomahawk missiles along with Typhon ground launchers.
Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is planning a trip to Washington to personally discuss the possibility of such a deal. At the same time, sources said, it is still unclear whether Pistorius will meet with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, given the deteriorating relations between Trump and Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the war in Iran.
At the same time, one of the publication's sources noted that Berlin is willing to pay more to guarantee the delivery of Tomahawks and speed them up.
According to the publication, this approach underscores the urgency of Berlin's plans, as concerns are growing that the U.S. decision to reduce its military presence in Europe is creating a gap in European deterrence against Russia.
Meanwhile, Carlo Masala, a professor of international politics at the Bundeswehr University in Munich, believes that this German plan "will not work." Washington "has not yet responded" to the purchase request and is now even less likely to approve it after "emptying its stockpile against Iran," he added.
Media earlier reported that Berlin planned to buy three launchers as well as 400 Tomahawk Block VB missiles.
A spokesman for the German Defense Ministry said that the purchase of commercially available systems was "still planned" and that a preliminary request had been made to the U.S. government. He declined to say whether Washington had responded, saying only that it was "an ongoing process."
There are currently no long-range land-based systems available in Europe. Britain has submarine-launched Tomahawk missiles with a range of 1,600 kilometers, and France has deployed a domestically produced cruise missile with a range of 1,000 kilometers on its submarines.
