Bloomberg: NATO To Invite Four Persian Gulf Countries To Ankara Summit

These countries are participating in the Istanbul Initiative.

NATO plans to invite representatives of Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE to the summit in Ankara, Bloomberg reported, citing sources. These countries participate in the Istanbul Initiative on NATO cooperation with Middle Eastern countries, but are not part of the bloc itself.

One of Bloomberg's interlocutors linked the decision to invite the Gulf states to NATO's plans to strengthen its southern flank. In addition, the bloc's leadership is considering inviting Ukraine and countries of the Indo-Pacific region. However, they will take part not in the main session of the summit, but in additional events, the agency's sources specified.

The summit will be held on July 7-8. Like last year, it will be held in a shortened format. The NATO leadership is also discussing the abandonment of annual summits, but there is no consensus on this issue in NATO, Bloomberg sources added.
