There Was A Shooting At The Philippine Senate

It's where the ICC's wanted senator is taking refuge.

Several gunshots rang out in the Philippine Senate building, House Speaker Alan Peter Caetano said. On May 11, Philippine Senator Ronald de la Rosa took refuge in the building to avoid arrest on an International Criminal Court warrant, writes The Philippine Star. According to Alan Peter Caetano, de la Rosa was not injured and is safe.

A squad of more than 10 military personnel, some armed with assault rifles, arrived at the building, Reuters reports.

"We don't know what's going on, everyone is now locked in their offices, we can't get out. We can't secure our employees," said Alan Peter Caetano, who was streaming live on Facebook. He added that he had agreed with his colleagues not to leave the building or Ronald de la Rosa.

The arrest warrant for the politician dates back to November 2025, but was made public on May 11. Philippine Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the warrant must be processed through Interpol because the country withdrew from the ICC in 2019.

The ICC accuses de la Rosa of killing citizens during the anti-drug campaign under former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte (2016-2022). Philippine police arrested the former head of state in March 2025 and brought him to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where he was charged with crimes against humanity. According to the ICC, thousands of people were killed in the Philippines between 2016 and 2018 during the anti-drug campaign. Ronald de la Rosa was then head of the republic's police force.
