Residents in the south have been asked to stay indoors and stay away from windows.
Finland's largest airport - the capital Helsinki-Vantaa - was closed for several hours on the morning of May 15 for the first time since the start of the war in Ukraine due to the threat of drones, writes Bloomberg. According to Kimmo Kohwakki, head of the rescue service of the Finnish Interior Ministry, at least one drone flew into the country. Presumably, the device was moving to the area between Helsinki and the city of Porvoo in southern Finland, where the oil refinery Neste Oyj is located, among other things. The Finnish Defense Forces have raised the level of alert.
The Finnish Air Force's Hornet fighter jets were raised on alert in the air over Uusimaa (the province where Helsinki is located) and off the southern coast of the republic. Air traffic at Helsinki Airport was restricted and ships in the Gulf of Finland were let in via bypass routes. Several flights arriving from Asia (Tokyo, Osaka, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc.) were turned to alternate airfields in Stockholm and the northern city of Rovaniemi. Also, for example, a direct flight to Berlin with a connection in Tallinn was postponed for several hours.
Almost 2 million residents of southern Finland were told early in the morning to stay indoors and stay away from windows because of the danger of drones. There is no direct military threat to Finland at the moment, according to the defense forces. During Ukraine's overnight strikes against targets in Russia, a warning about a possible threat in the airspace was also announced by Latvian authorities, Delfi reports. The alert was in effect from 1:43 to 6:37. The warning concerned four municipalities on the border with Russia and Belarus.
