Russian General Knocked Out Of Kharkiv Region By The AFU Will Be Sent To The State Duma
Colonel General Alesander Lapin

Scandalous Colonel General Lapin may become the head of the defense committee.

Russian Colonel-General Alexander Lapin, who commanded the Center group, which the AFU threw out of Kharkiv Region in 2022, may become head of the State Duma's defense committee. United Russia is considering his candidacy for this post in the new convocation of the lower house of parliament, informed sources told Kommersant. One of the publication's interlocutors noted that Andrey Kartapolov, who now heads the committee and was elected to the State Duma in 2021, is not likely to be re-elected.

Lapin, 62, is going to run for the State Duma on the United Russia list from Tatarstan. He was appointed chief of staff of a grouping of Russian troops in Syria in 2017 and became commander of the Central Military District in November of that year. After the grouping of troops under his command left Kharkiv region in the war in Ukraine, Lapin was removed from his post. In January 2023, he was appointed Chief of the General Staff - First Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Ground Forces. Then he was transferred to the post of the head of the Leningrad Military District.

In September 2025, according to RBC's source, Lapin was dismissed from military service. The publication Tatar-Inform wrote that he took the position of assistant to the head of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov. The republic's authorities did not officially confirm this information, but last October Lapin, along with regional officials, took part in the opening of a memorial square in one of Tatarstan's villages. RBC sources said that Minnikhanov was considering the possibility of nominating the colonel general for the Duma elections.

Later, Lapin said he would take part in the United Russia primaries. "I have devoted 43 years to the cause of serving my people, protecting my Fatherland. And at today's stage of life I have a great desire to serve my multinational people, to defend the interests of my small homeland, to help people, to fight for the truth, to fight for justice, defending the interests of our republic and in general our great homeland - Russia," the colonel-general said.
