Finland Announces Military Exercises Near Russian Borders

The Finnish military will be joined by foreign contingents from Germany and the United States.

The Finnish Navy will conduct exercise Narrow Waters 26-1 in the Gulf of Finland from May 18 to 29. According to the navy website, the maneuvers will also affect the coastal areas of southern Finland and the Archipelago Sea. In total, about three thousand servicemen will be involved in the exercise. The main task is to test readiness to act in real war conditions. Within the framework of training activities it is planned to actively use marine and aerial unmanned systems.

The Finnish military will be joined by foreign contingents: coastal gamekeeper company of the German Navy (about 100 people) and about 30 U.S. Marines.

Finland, which joined NATO in the spring of 2023 because of Russia's attack on Ukraine, regularly participates in the alliance's exercises near Russia's borders. In March, the large-scale maneuvers Cold Response 26, led by Norway, took place in the north of the country: 25,000 military personnel from 14 countries, including the United States and Britain. Then they practiced strengthening NATO's northern flank and cooperation in difficult climatic conditions. In November 2025, just 100 kilometers from the border of the Russian Federation held exercises Northern Strike 25 with the participation of 2.2 thousand military and 500 pieces of equipment.

After Finland joined the alliance, the length of NATO's border with Russia doubled - more than 1300 kilometers. Sweden also joined the alliance (in spring 2024).
