Islamabad is one of the main mediators in the negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
There is no alternative to diplomacy for achieving peace in the Middle East, the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated. This was the ministry’s response to the latest escalation of the conflict between the U.S. and Iran, which began with a large-scale exchange of strikes on the night of July 8.
The country’s Foreign Ministry expressed deep concern over developments in the region and stated that a resumption of hostilities is not in the interests of any of the parties. “Pakistan calls on all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from any actions that could further undermine peace and stability in the region,” the statement said.
Islamabad—one of the key mediators in the negotiations—called on Washington and Tehran to equally abide by the terms of the memorandum of understanding, as the document remains “a solid foundation for mutual understanding, mutual respect, and shared prosperity in the region and beyond.” Today, the parties accused each other of violating the agreement.
On the night of July 8, the U.S. struck targets in Iran in response to attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington declared a breach of the ceasefire, while Iran announced the suspension of negotiations. U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that it would be easier to resolve the conflict with Tehran without negotiations.
