Emerson Mnangagwa, 83, wants to remain in power at least until 2030.

Zimbabwe's 83-year-old dictator Emerson Mnangagwa has signed a law extending his time in power until 2030, according to Reuters. The bill, previously approved by both houses of the country’s parliament, took effect immediately.

In addition to extending the presidential term from five to seven years, the new law includes a provision abolishing direct popular elections for the head of state. The president will now be appointed by the country’s parliament.

Rumors that Mnangagwa intends to remain in power after his second term expires in 2028 began circulating about two years ago. Last year, the party adopted a resolution to amend the constitution, and in February of this year, the proposal was approved by the cabinet.

The bill drew criticism from opposition representatives, who called its passage by parliament a “constitutional coup.” According to one of the opposition leaders, Makomborero Haruzivshe, the bill “deprives citizens of the fundamental right to directly elect their president.”
