Bloomberg: NATO Prepares To Defend Ships In The Strait Of Hormuz

When can the Alliance start a mission?
NATO is considering launching a mission to help civilian ships pass through the blocked Strait of Hormuz.
This is reported by Bloomberg.
A senior alliance official said the NATO mission could be launched if the strategic waterway is not reopened by early July. The proposal has already received the approval of several member states, but the alliance still lacks unanimous support to make a final decision.
The issue is expected to be one of the key issues during a meeting of NATO leaders in Ankara scheduled for July 7-8.
At the same time, it remains unclear how exactly the alliance countries could guarantee the safe passage of commercial ships through the strait.
Allies have previously insisted that NATO involvement in operations in the strait is possible only after a complete cessation of hostilities and the formation of a broad international coalition.
Officials note, however, that even countries that now oppose a military mission will have to rally around the idea if the blockade drags on.
Iran completely blocked the Strait of Hormuz in late February after the U.S. and Israel launched a military operation. About a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas supplies are transported through this strategic waterway.
Since then, the logistical crisis has become a source of serious tension between Washington and its European NATO allies, who have refused to comply with the US president's demands for a forceful opening of the sea lanes.
