The United Arab Emirates has been hit by a massive kamikaze drone attack, one of which hit a facility on the grounds of a nuclear power plant. International experts warn that such incidents could trigger a massive nuclear disaster across the region.
This was reported by The Jerusalem Post.
Six drones have been launched from Iraqi territory in the past 48 hours, the piece claims. The target was the Barakah nuclear power plant, the first commercial nuclear power plant in the Arab world.
The UAE military repelled the attack and destroyed almost all the UAVs. However, one drone managed to break through an air defense shield and landed near an important facility within the nuclear power plant.
The Emirates Defense Ministry said the drone hit a generator. It happened outside the plant's inner perimeter and critical units were not damaged.
Emirati officials called the incident a "terrorist attack" and said the country reserves the right to respond.
Results and Regulators' Response
The nuclear plant itself was not damaged and the radiation background is normal - no emissions have been recorded. The UAE's Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority promptly checked all systems. The facility is now under heavy security.
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency Rafael Grossi said the consequences of such attacks could lead to disaster.
He said a direct hit by a missile or drone would result in a "very high release of radioactivity." At the same time, damage to power lines threatens to shut down cooling systems, which could trigger meltdowns of reactor cores.
