Rutte Advances New Plan To Keep The U.S. In NATO
Mark Rutte

The Alliance's secretary general took the initiative.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has launched a new initiative aimed at preserving the United States' active role in the Alliance - to buy more weapons from American companies.

This is reported by Politico, citing sources.

According to Rutte's plan, new defense agreements that would benefit the United States would help win back NATO's commitment to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Defense production will be a priority topic at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in the Swedish city of Helsingborg on Friday.

According to three NATO diplomats, Rutte has led a campaign in recent weeks to significantly increase production and defense agreements in an effort to make July's summit of alliance leaders in Ankara a success.

The sources said this is aimed at overcoming Europe's real arms shortage, as well as making an economic case that resonates with Trump.

The diplomats said this includes encouraging joint ventures to enter into agreements with U.S. defense firms and increasing the prolongation of the increased production is also likely to be an "important part" of the July summit declaration in Ankara.

At the same time, Politico notes that any effort to deeply involve NATO in defense agreements is likely to spark a clash with the EU, which is preparing to provide billions of euros in SAFE loans to prioritize the development of its own defense industry.
