Metropolitan Of The Russian Orthodox Church, Who Was Awarded By Putin, Was Detained In The Czech Republic On Suspicion Of Drug Trafficking
Metropolitan Hilarion

A search of his auto revealed "four containers of a white colored substance."

On May 24, Metropolitan Hilarion of the Russian Orthodox Church was detained in the Czech Republic on suspicion of drug trafficking.

This was reported by Censor.NET.

Details

It is known that the Russian Metropolitan was sent "to retire" from his position as head of the Budapest-Hungarian diocese and is currently serving in a church in the Czech city of Karlovy Vary.

Hilarion's Telegram channel reported that police officers found "four small containers with a white-colored substance" when they searched his car.

The Czech police confirmed that a car was stopped in the area of the village of Ungosht near Prague. The reason was an anonymous report about the transportation of narcotic and psychotropic substances.

The prosecutor's office said that at the moment no one has been charged, the interrogation of the two detainees continues.

At the same time, the Metropolitan's Telegram channel reported that a cameraman was traveling with Hilarion.

The Metropolitan himself denies involvement in drug possession and called the whole thing a "provocation."

"According to the information we have, no claims regarding traffic violations have been made. Most likely, the task was set to search this particular vehicle. The police went straight to the trunk - as if they knew in advance where to look," Hilarion's lawyer said.

What is known about Hilarion?

The metropolitan previously headed the Moscow Patriarchate's foreign relations department for many years and was considered one of the closest to Patriarch Kirill.

Hilarion was sent to serve in Karlovy Vary by a decision of the Russian Orthodox Church's Holy Synod in December 2024. At that time, he was relieved of the administration of the Budapest-Hungarian diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church after his former keliynik (assistant) Georgi Suzuki accused the hierarch of harassment.

It is also known that he was honored by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
