What are they going to fight?

The Israel Defense Forces is forming special micro-air force units to fight in southern Lebanon. This allows the infantry to conduct its own reconnaissance and strike Hezbollah militants.

According to Ynet News.

The Israeli Army is going through the fastest technological change in its history. Previously, drones were just a support tool, but now every field unit has its own air force.

The Northern Command's Drone School is one of the military institutions where the IDF's UAV force is being forged. Today, drone technology is used by dozens of reserve commands directly on the front lines.

The commander of the school, explains the new concept this way:

"We have turned drone warfare into a profession. While drones used to be a small support tool, today field units have their own 'micro air force.' Much of the missions, from identifying the enemy, targeting, dropping payloads, controlling heavier drones and other complex tasks that cannot be detailed, are now performed independently by drones."

Tactical Nightmare in Lebanon's Mountains

The terrain of southern Lebanon poses huge challenges for the military. Deep valleys and dense shrubbery allow Hezbollah fighters to camouflage themselves reliably. Drones have become the only way to fully control this space.

A skilled operator sees what is hidden from the eyes of ordinary infantry. This makes the field commander almost omnipotent.

Israel is scrutinizing the experience of the Russian-Ukrainian war because Hezbollah's FPV drones have become the main threat in recent months. Some of them use fiber-optic cables, making them invulnerable to electronic warfare.

The command is implementing a new defense doctrine. It includes detection and interception systems, but there is no perfect solution yet. The learning curve is growing at a furious pace on both sides of the conflict.

Technology alone is not enough to win. The school trains specialized soldiers - sky watchers. They are responsible for early warning of enemy vehicles.

The army now uses a comprehensive defense against drones:

Special physical protective nets.

Masking for terrain features.

Use of small arms to shoot down drones.

Permanent radio scanning.

This doctrine is the final layer of protection, like body armor for a soldier.

"It unequivocally saves lives. We want to get this message out to as many soldiers in the field as possible because, at the end of the day, this doctrine is the last and most important layer of defense," says the head of the drone school.
