The United States did not allow the Russian tanker Universal to pass to Cuba. After almost a month of drifting in the Sargasso Sea, the ship changed course and headed south, writes The Insider.
The tanker left the Russian port of Vistino and left the Baltic Sea on April 6 escorted by a Russian corvette.
On its way across the Atlantic, it was also escorted by Russian warships. The vessel was able to pass through the English Channel despite statements by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer about London's intention to detain Russian vessels under sanctions.
The tanker Universal is under U.S. and European Union sanctions. Washington imposed restrictions against the ship in January 2025, and the EU put it on the sanctions list in May. The official reason is the transportation of Russian oil using "high-risk shipping practices."
