The historian spoke about the reaction of Russian officials to the outbreak of war.
Former first deputy chief of staff of Russia's presidential administration Vladislav Surkov, who was a longtime overseer of the "DNR" and "LNR" groups, called Russian dictator Vladimir Putin "mad" when he launched a full-scale war against Ukraine in 2022.
Russian historian and Stalinist Evgeny Spitsyn said this on the air of blogger Pavel Ivanov's YouTube channel, noted "Dialogue".
Spitsyn said he learned about it from former Roscosmos head Dmitry Rogozin, who received a text message from Surkov with the relevant content.
"And here he shows me the correspondence with Surkov. Surkov writes to Rogozin: 'Grandfather (we are talking about Putin - ed.) has gone mad,'" he said.
When asked by Ivanov when exactly this correspondence took place, Spitsyn said that in 2022, and also noted that this viewpoint is held by far not only by Surkov among representatives of the Russian power elites, considering the decision to start a war a fatal mistake.
"It is clear who he meant by grandfather - Putin. Grandfather has lost his mind. Is this understanding of what happened in 2022 what you think is only in Surkov's head? No. I think that a significant part of the officials who sit in the highest offices," he added.
According to Spitsyn, the only difference between Surkov and these officials is that the former has made a "false start," so he may already be outside Russia, while those who have taken a wait-and-see attitude.
