Britain Signs Strategic Partnership Agreement With Armenia

Yerevan is distancing itself from the Kremlin.

Armenia has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Britain, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said. Pashinyan published a video of him and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer signing the documents. Armenia and the UK are opening a new and promising chapter in relations built on shared values and strengthened cooperation, Pashinyan wrote on social network X. The press service of the Armenian government published the document, which points to the commitment of both sides to democratic values, recognizing the importance of free elections, fighting corruption and creating a favorable environment for independent media and civil society.

In the framework of strategic cooperation, Yerevan and London intend to develop Armenia's potential in the spheres of b Pashinyan invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Yerevan. According to Zelensky, the sides discussed the development of economic partnership, including the resumption of the work of the joint intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation.

The signing of documents and meetings took place on the sidelines of the summit of the European Political Community, established in 2022 at the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron. The summit in Yerevan is intended to serve "the formation of a more sustainable, secure and united European space." Representatives of 40 countries have arrived in the Armenian capital as part of it. Pashinyan said participants will have the opportunity to "discuss the most important topics, from hybrid threats and the sustainability of democratic institutions to connectivity and energy issues." Macron noted the political changes in Armenia and praised the Armenian prime minister for his course toward European integration. "Let's be honest: eight years ago no one would have come here. Eight years ago, this country was considered a de facto satellite of Russia at the negotiating table. The fact that today we see so many new visits to your country is very revealing," Macron said (quoted by News.am).

The current rapprochement between Yerevan and Western countries comes amid growing tensions with Moscow, which intensified after Pashinyan's meeting with Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin. In early April, the Armenian prime minister emphasized to the Kremlin the democratic nature of his country's political system. "You know, Armenia is a democratic country," Pashinyan said. - We actually always have political processes, and this is already a common thing for us. We have social media, for example, 100% free. There are no restrictions at all. At the same time, Pashinyan reaffirmed the course of rapprochement with the European Union and recalled that Yerevan had frozen its membership in the military bloc of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

Three weeks after the talks, Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council Alexei Shevtsov warned that Armenia cannot simultaneously be a member of both the EAEU and the EU, which means that in case of further movement towards Europe, it will have to leave the Eurasian Economic Union. According to him, this could result in economic losses for the country.
