Belarusians Are Ignoring Vehicle Inspections En Masse

More than half of all cars are on the road without a valid inspection.

In Belarus, more than half of all cars do not have a valid vehicle inspection. These figures were reported by the organization "Beltekhosmotr" as of June 1, 2026.

In total, more than 4.5 million vehicles are registered in the country. However, only 2.13 million vehicles have been issued a permit to participate in road traffic (vehicle inspection). Thus, approximately 2.4 million vehicles, or 52.9%, have either failed the vehicle inspection or have an expired permit.

At the same time, the number of active insurance policies is significantly higher. Insurance has been taken out on approximately 2.8 million vehicles—that is 663,000, or nearly 24%, more than the number of vehicles with a valid inspection.

Thus, many car owners prefer to purchase insurance policies to protect themselves from financial risks in the event of a traffic accident, but at the same time ignore the mandatory vehicle inspection procedure.
