Ukrainian drones are destroying what the HIMARS couldn't.

Ukrainian strike next-generation medium-range drones are having an increasingly noticeable impact on the course of hostilities. According to Western analysts, such systems are partially restoring Ukraine’s ability to strike rear-area targets, a capability that was previously largely provided by American HIMARS rocket systems, writes Business Insider.

One example of their use was a strike on a building in the Zaporizhzhia area, where, according to the Ukrainian military, Russian FPV drone operators were located. An operator from the "Typhoon" unit of the Ukrainian National Guard, with the call sign "Spring", said that this was her first successful combat mission with a medium-range drone. According to her, the drone struck the roof of the building with precision, causing an explosion that destroyed the top floor.

At the start of the full-scale war, HIMARS systems allowed Ukraine to strike ammunition depots, command posts, and logistics hubs deep behind enemy lines. However, as experts note, over time the Russian side adapted to this threat.

Nikolai Beleskov, an analyst at the “Come Back Alive” Foundation , believes that the greatest impact of HIMARS was observed in the first year of the war, especially in the summer and fall of 2022. According to him, Russian electronic warfare systems began to more actively jam GPS guidance, and Ukraine continued to face a shortage of long-range munitions.

According to George Barros, director of open-source analysis at the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War , the emergence of Ukrainian medium-range drones could signal a transition to a new phase of the conflict. He notes that such assets are capable of systematically impacting the enemy’s offensive capabilities and complicating its logistics.

It is reported that the new drones are capable of striking targets at a range of approximately 30 to 300 kilometers and carrying a warhead of significant power. One of the key features is the use of artificial intelligence elements: if communication is lost due to electronic warfare, the drone can independently complete its mission.

It is also claimed that such systems are capable of identifying targets during the final phase of flight, which increases their effectiveness against moving targets—such as convoys of military vehicles, refueling trucks, and support vehicles.
