A Drone Attack On Moscow Could Have Halted Up To 20% Of The City's Fuel Production

Analysts have pointed out problems with the air defense system.

A drone attack on Moscow damaged facilities at a local oil refinery, which could have affected part of the fuel production in the capital of the aggressor country, the Russian Federation, and also revealed problems in the operation of Russian air defense systems.

This was reported on Tuesday, June 16, by "Agency. News".

The report noted that the strike on the Moscow refinery damaged an oil refinery that accounts for about 40% of oil processing in the capital region. Judging by the published videos, one of the units responsible for approximately half of the plant’s primary processing has likely been put out of commission.

According to Sergei Vakulenko, an expert at the Carnegie Eurasia Center , the damaged unit accounts for about half of the refinery’s capacity in the Kapotnya area and could affect 15–20% of Moscow’s fuel consumption.

OSINT analyst Kirill Mikhailov stated that the air defense system around Moscow did not function effectively enough during the attack, given the large number of air defense assets deployed around the city and the relatively small number of drones involved.

The analyst noted that the attack may have exposed weaknesses in the Russian capital’s defense system. In his view, Russia relies heavily on the "Pantsir" anti-aircraft missile and gun systems, while the use of other means of countering drones, in particular mobile fire groups or interceptor drones, remains largely unnoticed.

Mikhailov also suggested that the problems may be related to the detection of small, low-flying targets, since Russian radars are not always suited for such tasks, and there is likely no effective acoustic detection system.

According to the analyst, if such strikes involving a small number of UAVs continue to be effective in the future, this could indicate systemic problems in the operation of Moscow’s air defense system.
