Latvia's new prime minister Andris Kulbergs "ironcladly insists" that the country must suspend economic ties with Russia and Belarus, writes Delfi.
Lately, Latvia changed its government amid incidents with Ukrainian UAVs. Andris Kulbergs became the new prime minister on May 28. At a press conference on June 2, he said that he insists on ending Latvia's economic ties with aggressor countries.
"This is an unnecessary dependence that only worsens the situation," Kulbergs said.
He will instruct Foreign Minister Baiba Braža to find a solution for its implementation in coordination with the European Union.
At the same time, Kulbergs admitted that export restrictions may not apply to the pharmaceutical industry. In his opinion, this important industry for the country cannot quickly reorient to other markets, although companies in the sector have plans to do so.
"These are crucial companies with production capacity and expertise. They are also crucial for our defense, and these opportunities must be protected," explained the Prime Minister.
Reminder, there are regular flows of migrants to Latvia from Belarus. Thus, over the past day, border guards have recorded 72 attempts of illegal entry across the Belarusian-Latvian border. More than 4,500 attempts to break through have been prevented since the beginning of the year.
