Russia Has Filed A Request To Join The Dispute Between Lithuania And Belarus At The UN Court

Russia has filed a request to join as a third party in the dispute between Lithuania and Belarus over migrants at the International Court of Justice. This was reported by the press service of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Russia’s application has been published on the court’s website.

The dispute began in May 2025 after Lithuania filed a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice. In its complaint, Lithuania accused Belarus of organizing the large-scale influx of migrants into Lithuania and demanded compensation for damages, including the costs of constructing border barriers.

This marks the first time Russia has joined an international legal proceeding as a third party, the Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized. “This is driven by a sincere intention to preserve a consistent and correct interpretation of the relevant international treaties, to avoid an unduly broad interpretation that undermines their effectiveness, and thereby to strengthen their legal framework. We are convinced that this is in the interests of the entire system of international justice,” the statement said.

The authorities in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland have stated that the Lukashenko regime began sending illegal migrants from the Middle East and Africa to the Baltic states in 2021. Since then, Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland have denied entry to more than 200,000 migrants from Belarus, according to the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service.
