House Defies Trump For First Time Over War With Iran

The resolution limits what the president of the United States can do.

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a resolution that effectively limits President Donald Trump from conducting military operations for the first time in the political confrontation over Iran. The document was supported not only by Democrats, but also by four Republicans, in a notable signal of an internal split in the Republican Party.

As reported by New York Times, the vote passed with 215 in favor, 208 against. The resolution requires the Trump administration to either withdraw U.S. troops from operations against Iran or get formal congressional authorization to continue fighting.

At the same time, the document is not yet final. It still has to be considered by the Senate, where prospects for passage remain uncertain. Even if approved by both chambers, the resolution would require the president's signature or a two-thirds veto override to take effect, making it difficult to implement.

The vote was telling because of the position of some Republicans. Opposing the president's line were Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett and Warren Davidson. That, experts said, signaled growing dissatisfaction with the protracted military campaign.

House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized the document, saying it "weakens the U.S. negotiating position" and poses a national security risk. For their part, Democrats insist that Congress should regain a key role in military decisions, especially over long-running conflicts abroad:

"Most Republicans supported the administration's version that Iran posed a direct threat to the United States."

The decision came amid a worsening situation in the region. Negotiations between Washington and Tehran have stalled, oil prices have risen for the third consecutive day and fighting has resumed in the Persian Gulf region.

Experts note that even though the resolution has political resonance, its practical impact may be limited, but it clearly demonstrates the increased domestic political pressure on the Trump administration over the Iran war.
