U.S. Imposes Sweeping Sanctions Against Cuba's Political Leadership

Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned of the consequences for the Cuban regime's partners.

The United States announced the introduction of new economic sanctions against the political leadership of Cuba. The current president of the country, his inner circle and members of the Castro family have fallen under the restrictions.

According to The Guardian.

This time the U.S. Treasury Department sanctions hit directly the families of the communist regime's leaders. The list of updated restrictions was unexpectedly broad.

The blacklist includes the following individuals and entities:

the son and grandson of former president Raul Castro;

the current Cuban president Miguel Diaz-Canel;

the Cuban leader's wife and stepson;

the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba.

Raul Castro no longer holds official positions on the island, but he remains a central figure in determining the country's political future. Now financial restrictions have hit his immediate family.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned the global community that financial restrictions will affect anyone who tries to help blocked institutions or individuals. Rubio said the U.S. is targeting a network that enables and finances Cuba's subversive and radical operations.

"Anyone who provides services to these sanctioned entities is themselves at risk of sanctions. Foreign banks and other companies that provide services to these entities should freeze those activities," Rubio said.

The Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples, Amistura Cuba and the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution have fallen under the sanctions blockade, in addition to Cuba's army.
