In May, Ukraine Liberated More Territory Than Russia Has Seized

ISW analysts revealed the details.

The effectiveness of the Russian offensive campaign is declining despite the use of various mapping methods to analyze the situation on the battlefield. The Ukrainian military liberated more territory in May than the Russians managed to capture.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports.

In May, analysts estimate that Russian forces captured or infiltrated about 40 square kilometers, while losing control over about 280 square kilometers.

In April, the Russians captured or infiltrated about 28 square kilometers, but lost control over about 116 square kilometers.

At the same time, ISW recorded that some of Russia's "advances" are only temporary infiltrations deep into Ukrainian positions.

The areas into which Russian troops, sometimes in very small groups of a few soldiers, have infiltrated and maintain a limited presence are not doctrinally controlled by the Russians.

At the same time, it is noted that the current combat situation, namely frequent changes in Ukrainian and Russian positions and the growth of the drone strike zone, makes it difficult to accurately calculate gains and losses.

In addition, despite the fact that the sources use different counting methodologies, but still come to common general conclusions regarding Russian and Ukrainian advances on the battlefield.

The ISW noted that against this background, Kremlin officials continue to reject any negotiated settlement that does not address the "root causes" of the war in Ukraine.

Thus, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in a video message marking Russian Language Day that restoring the rights of Russians and the Russian-speaking population in Ukraine "is a necessary condition for a long-term peaceful settlement."

"The Kremlin's continued devotion to Russia's initial military goals comes amid a decline in Russian combat capabilities and a slowdown in the Russian advance," analysts said.

The Russian offensive has slowed to its lowest numbers in a year. The occupiers' casualties are breaking records: about 35,000 military personnel are killed or seriously wounded every month - and the recruitment of contract soldiers is barely closing the hole.

The price of every kilometer of advance has risen sharply. If last fall Russia was spending 67 soldiers per square kilometer of captured territory, in April it was already 179. And in May, it was even more.
