The Ukrainian Military Shot Down Russia's Latest "Bandero" Missile Using A 70-year-old Anti-aircraft Gun

The Ukrainian Defense Forces received these weapons from Lithuania and the Netherlands.

Fighters from the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ 121st Separate Territorial Defense Brigade shot down Russian S8000 “Banderole” and Kh-59 missiles using old Swedish Bofors L70 40-mm anti-aircraft guns. The “Chaklun” crew achieved this result while operating near Odesa, according to a statement from the brigade at Facebook.

It is noted that the crew shot down one of the missiles while operating near Odessa. The next day, another missile was intercepted by a “Hunter” crew near another city in the south.

According to Defense Express, these incidents are clear evidence of the effectiveness of the Bofors L70 anti-aircraft guns, which have been in service with various countries around the world since the 1950s. Moreover, this gun was developed as early as the late 1940s.

Analysts noted that the Bofors L70s in service with the 121st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Brigade have not undergone significant modifications, aside from new sighting systems. Therefore, targeting aerial targets is most likely carried out manually.

Analysts also noted that the Bofors L70 guns were sent to Ukraine as part of military aid from Lithuania, as announced in 2023. It is also known that the Ukrainian Defense Forces received these weapons from the Netherlands as well.
