The Times: August 2026 Could Be Putin's Worst Month Yet

The war against Ukraine has put his regime in a difficult position.

Journalists at The Times noted that August in Russia is often marked by various disasters, explosions, natural disasters, man-made catastrophes, and political upheavals.

According to British journalists, Russians themselves already refer to August as the “cursed” month.

In August 1991, back during the Soviet era, an attempted coup took place when troops were sent into Moscow.

In 2000, the Russian submarine *Kursk* sank; in 2009, an explosion occurred at the Sayano-Shushenskaya Hydroelectric Power Plant (killing 75 people at the time), and in 2024, the Ukrainian Defense Forces launched a defensive operation in Russia’s Kursk Oblast.

Floods and wildfires frequently occur in Russia in August. In addition, for some reason, plane crashes and terrorist attacks often occur on Russian territory this month.

For example, in August 2004, Tu-134 and Tu-154 aircraft crashed as a result of suicide bombers detonating explosives, killing 90 people.

The Times believes that August 2026 could be the bleakest month for Putin. The Kremlin leader has good reason to fear the coming month, as the war against Ukraine has put his regime in a difficult position.
