Sánchez: The Migrant Surge Into Ceuta Is An Attack On Spain

The influx of tens of thousands of illegal migrants into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta in North Africa is an “attack” on Spain and a “violation of the country’s territorial integrity.” This was stated on Friday, July 31, by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who arrived in Ceuta, according to "Deutsche Welle".

The day before, Madrid had sent troops to the exclave for the first time since 2021 to maintain order.

According to local authorities, approximately 60,000 migrants have illegally entered the Spanish exclave, which borders Morocco, in recent days. Dozens of them drowned while attempting to swim from Morocco to Ceuta. By the evening of July 31, the death toll stood at 57, according to the dpa news agency.

Madrid: Tens of thousands of migrants have returned to Morocco

At the same time, the Spanish government reported that tens of thousands of migrants have voluntarily returned to Morocco via the land border. On the evening of July 31, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stated on social media platform X that the crisis had effectively been resolved: nearly everyone who had entered Ceuta had by that point already returned to Morocco.

Ceuta residents took to the streets in protest

The previous evening, residents of Ceuta, which has a population of about 85,000, took to the streets to protest the influx of illegal migrants, accusing the government of losing control of the situation. Many stores remained closed due to fears of looting, according to the dpa news agency. “Many people are afraid to leave their homes,” one resident told RTVE.

According to the European Commission, so far, not a single undocumented migrant who arrived in Ceuta has managed to reach mainland Europe.
