Turkey Has Resumed Ship Transit Through The Black Sea: New Details

Turkey has resumed the transit of ships through its straits en route to the Black Sea following unexplained delays for some vessels amid heightened security risks in the region, according to Bloomberg.
The publication reported that the oil tanker Aegean Dream entered the Dardanelles Strait on Sunday after waiting in the area since Thursday. According to data from a vessel tracking system, it listed the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal in Novorossiysk, Russia, as its destination.
It added that the container ship Mehmet Kahveci A also passed through the strait early Sunday morning, listing Novorossiysk as its destination.
Turkey’s General Directorate of Coastal Safety has recently informed some vessels bound for Russian and Ukrainian ports that it is currently not issuing transit permits for such voyages.
Notably, the reason for this decision was not disclosed to the vessels, and the Turkish agency has not provided any public comments on the matter.
The publication noted that Turkey’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure did not respond to an inquiry on Sunday, August 9.
“The delays arose after the Turkish government began speaking out more actively about attacks on merchant shipping in the Black Sea, some of which were directed against vessels owned by Turkey or flying its flag,” the article explains.
On Saturday, the agency reported, citing a U.S. official, that Ukraine had agreed to help ensure safe passage for some non-Russian oil tankers.
Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said in an overnight interview with the state-run Anadolu news agency that Turkey has appealed to both Ukraine and Russia to declare a “moratorium” on military operations in the Black Sea.
“We have developed a series of measures on this issue, which we have presented to our president. We are now putting them into practice,” he noted.
