An Explosion Rocked The Port Of Rotterdam

There are casualties.

An explosion occurred at the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, killing one person and injuring several others. This was reported by Reuters.

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. in the Europort area—in a storage tank at a facility belonging to the international energy company Gunvor Energy. At the time of the explosion, a maintenance crew was working on the pipelines on the company’s premises.

A Gunvor spokesperson confirmed the incident and suggested that something went wrong while the pipes were being disconnected. Visible damage was observed on the storage tank following the explosion.

According to Reuters, the Rotterdam police found no signs of sabotage. The cause of the incident is under investigation, and emergency services continue to work at the scene.

Earlier that same morning, a large-scale power outage occurred in the Botlek port area. Due to the power outage, the ExxonMobil oil refinery temporarily suspended operations. In addition, a high-voltage substation caught fire in the Maasvlakte industrial zone. Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have been caused by a power surge.
