A Hitman Hired By Russia Was Arrested In Poland

He was planning to kill a U.S. citizen who was “a thorn in the side of Putin’s regime.”

Polish authorities have arrested a Russian national whom investigators believe was hired by Moscow to assassinate a Ukrainian and a U.S. citizen in Warsaw. This was reported by Reuters citing Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. According to the head of government, the arrest took place on August 7, and the suspect had been “recruited by Russian intelligence services” to kill a person who was “inconvenient to Putin’s regime.” Tusk did not provide any further information about the alleged victim, other than that he holds both U.S. and Ukrainian passports.

According to the publication Rzeczpospolita, the hitman’s target was supposed to be an arms industry entrepreneur who supplied Ukraine. The suspect is a 29-year-old resident of Donbas. He was detained in the Mokotów district of Warsaw by officers from the Capital Police Department’s Terrorism and Homicide Investigation Unit. Officers from the counterterrorism unit also participated in the operation. “At the last minute, thanks to the actions of the Internal Security Agency and the police, we managed to prevent this execution, this attack,” the Polish prime minister stated.

Tusk emphasized that this is “the first such situation in which someone, acting on Russia’s orders, has decided to attack a U.S. citizen on the territory of another NATO country.” “We must assume that Putin’s regime will attempt to eliminate people who cause him trouble, for various reasons, in various places around the world, so our response to this matter will be extremely vigorous in order to prevent any further attempts to attack citizens of Poland or other countries on our territory,” he said.
