The Russian Stock Market Posted Its Biggest Drop Since September 2022

Analysts believe it will continue.

The Moscow Exchange Index (IMOEX) plummeted 4.29% to 2,136.35 points at the close of the main session on Friday, August 14. This was the sharpest single-day drop since September 26, 2022, when the IMOEX lost 7.49%, according to RBC. The previous record low in recent years was set on July 16 of this year, but at that time the index fell slightly less—by 4.24%.

During the evening session, stocks were only able to rebound slightly. The IMOEX2 index, which tracks market performance including during extended trading sessions, fell 3.56% by the close of Thursday’s evening trading and stood at 2,140.52 points, according to data as of 7:28 p.m. Minsk time.

“On Friday, August 14, the Russian stock market, having opened with a tentative gain, quickly shifted sentiment, allowing the ‘bears’ to run rampant until the close of trading, and as a result, the delighted ‘bears’—to use stock market slang—crushed the market to dust,” commented Natalia Milchakova, a leading analyst at Freedom Global .

According to her, today’s crash was most likely linked to escalating geopolitical tensions. At the same time, investors ignored even the rise in oil prices.

On Friday morning, the Moscow Exchange Index was above 2,240 points, but by the afternoon it had fallen below 2,200 points. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that a ceasefire along the current line of contact is unacceptable. He also said that Moscow would intensify its efforts to disrupt the West’s “fueling of the military support machine” for Kyiv.

“Both the renewed attacks on fuel infrastructure and signals from the fuel market—with several regions reintroducing limits on gasoline sales—are cause for concern,” — noted Anastasia Popova, an expert at BKS World of Investments .
