ISW: The Ukrainian Armed Forces Have Liberated More Than 600 Square Kilometers Of Ukrainian Territory

Ukraine is preparing for a new attack.

During the counteroffensive operation, which lasted from January 29 to August 12, 2026, liberated over 626 square kilometers of territory in the Oleksandrivka sector and in the northern part of the Huliaipole sector—on a section of the front where the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk regions meet. This conservative assessment was provided by the U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), which verified the data announced by the Ukrainian leadership on August 12.

Kyiv itself had claimed more extensive results—the liberation of over 745 square kilometers of territory and 26 settlements, as well as the clearing of approximately 300 square kilometers further behind the front lines of Russian “infiltrators.”

The Ukrainian OSINT project DeepState has for the first time depicted the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ advance on its map—this had not been done previously for security reasons. According to the map, approximately 240 square kilometers have come under Ukraine’s firm control, while the remaining territory is marked as a “gray zone.”

Analysts estimate that during the same period—from January to August—Russian troops occupied a total of 586 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory across all sectors of the front. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the goal of the operation was to thwart the Russian spring-summer offensive and drive Russian units out of the Dnipropetrovsk region.

The ISW notes that the success of the Ukrainian counteroffensive was due to a combination of several factors: improved operational planning by the command, a campaign to suppress and destroy Russian air defense systems, an increase in medium-range strikes against enemy logistics, as well as Ukraine’s advantage in the use of drones and the blocking of the Starlink network for Russian troops. According to the institute’s analysts, the operation demonstrates Ukraine’s ability to achieve significant tactical successes by resuming the limited use of mechanized maneuver groups in specific sectors of the front.

The institute also calculated that, over the same period, Russian forces lost approximately 233.7 square kilometers of territory along the entire front line, managing to capture only 383 square kilometers of new territory.

Military analyst Yan Matveev noted that in the near future, the Ukrainian command will likely lift the ban on reporting on operations in the Lyman sector as well. According to him, Ukrainian forces are preparing to “cut off” the Russian-controlled salient north of the city.
