Spain Is Preparing For A New Influx Of Migrants Into Ceuta

Thousands of security forces, military personnel, and water cannons have been deployed to the border.
Spain and Morocco have stepped up security measures at the borders around the Spanish exclave of Ceuta following calls on social media for another mass influx of migrants, reports dpa.
According to the agency’s correspondent on the scene, the situation at the border was calm as of Saturday morning. Spanish media also reported this.
Authorities in both countries are working to prevent a repeat of the events at the end of July, when, according to various estimates, up to 80,000 migrants stormed into Ceuta.
Spain’s Minister of the Interior Fernando Grande-Marlaska recently reiterated that this was an isolated incident that will not happen again.
A few days ago, Morocco’s Ministry of the Interior announced the arrest of a group of individuals suspected of inciting new attempts to illegally enter the Spanish exclaves of Ceuta and Melilla.
Calls for a mass border crossing on August 15 were circulating on social media. However, the ministry stated that all necessary measures have been taken to prevent illegal crossings.
In recent days, security measures have been significantly stepped up, especially on the Moroccan side of the border. In the border town of Fnideq, authorities have erected additional barriers made of barbed wire and razor wire.
Patrol boats are monitoring the coastline, and water cannons have been deployed at the border. According to RTVE, numerous checkpoints have also been set up on access roads.
Meanwhile, 880 officers of the Spanish National Police are currently deployed in Ceuta—270 more than at the end of July. They are supported by approximately 2,000 soldiers and 700 Civil Guard officers.
On July 30, tens of thousands of migrants reached Ceuta, mostly by swimming, with dozens of people dying while attempting the crossing.
According to the Spanish government, most of the arrivals returned to Morocco within a few hours or days.
Grande-Marlaska stated that there are currently about 5,000 migrants in Ceuta, as before. The minister acknowledged that it will take some time to fully restore normal life in this exclave.
