This is the fourth UAV to have been shot down since the beginning of 2026.

A Spanish F-18 fighter jet, conducting a NATO air patrol mission, shot down a drone that had illegally entered Romanian airspace. This is far from the first drone detected by Romanian authorities this year.

This was reported by CNN.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense reported that the incident occurred during a patrol conducted by a Spanish F-18 fighter jet as part of a NATO mission. The Romanian ministry did not officially specify the origin of the drone.

According to the ministry, radars detected the drone entering Romanian airspace from neighboring Moldova. This occurred approximately 24 km north of the city of Galați in the southeastern part of the country.

The fighter jet received authorization to shoot it down

After detecting the drone, the F-18 fighter jet established radar contact with it. It was then shot down on orders at 5:01 a.m. local time.

Romanian authorities noted that the wreckage likely fell in an uninhabited area between two villages.

Fourth Drone Shot Down in a Year

This is the fourth unmanned aerial vehicle that Romania has shot down since the beginning of 2026. The country has repeatedly recorded drone incursions into its airspace over the past four years amid Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, CNN notes.
