A routine car accident in Slovenia has escalated into a political scandal involving the country’s president Natasha Pirc-Musar. The controversy stems from her longstanding relationship with Viktoria Krivolutska—a Slovenian woman of Russian descent who was previously linked to a former Slovenian intelligence officer who had moved to Russia, according to Le Figaro.
Following the July car accident, the parliamentary security committee called an emergency meeting and intends to request information from the SOVA intelligence service regarding possible Russian influence. Pirz-Musar herself denies any ties to Russian intelligence agencies.
At the time of the accident, “two friends” were in the official vehicle with the president, her office stated. As a result of the accident, Pirc-Musar suffered a broken collarbone.
According to the publication, journalists discovered that Krivolutska had traveled to Russia with Pirc-Musar on multiple occasions. In addition, for many years she was close to Roman Jeglič—a former Slovenian intelligence officer who moved to Russia in the 1990s.
“Krivolutska confirms that she lived with him for ‘years,’ but claims she has had no contact with Jeglič for about 15 years,” writes Le Figaro.
The opposition Slovenian Democratic Party is now calling for a review of the president’s access to intelligence information. Pirc-Musar’s administration, on the other hand, insists that there is no evidence of Krivolutska’s ties to Russian intelligence.
The situation is particularly sensitive due to Pirc-Musar’s own political stance. Elected president in 2022, she is considered a liberal and pro-European politician and has repeatedly criticized the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
