Trump Has Decided To Name An Aircraft Carrier After Himself

No ship had ever been named after a sitting U.S. president before.

The U.S. Navy is considering renaming the aircraft carrier USS Doris Miller, currently under construction, in honor of President Donald Trump. This was reported by CNN and NBC News. If the decision is made, it will be an unprecedented move—no aircraft carrier has ever been named after a sitting president.

Originally, the Ford-class ship was planned to be named after Doris “Dory” Miller—a Black enlisted sailor who became famous during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The Navy announced this decision in January 2020, during Trump’s first presidential term. According to CNN, discussions about a possible renaming have been ongoing since early 2026.

At the same time, the network reports that the Navy is considering naming another ship after Miller. In addition, he has been nominated for the Medal of Honor—the United States’ highest military decoration. Thomas Bledsoe, Miller’s grandnephew, told CNN that the family had not received any notification regarding the change to the original plans.

According to CNN, within the Navy, the ship is already effectively no longer referred to as the USS Doris Miller; instead, its hull number—CVN-81—is being used. The same designation appeared in a recent White House executive order regarding the shipbuilding program. The Navy must decide on the final name before the keel-laying ceremony, which is expected at the end of the year; according to USNI News, the ship itself will not be delivered to the Navy until at least 2034.

NBC News notes that, formally, the authority to name ships rests with the Secretary of the Navy, but Secretaries of Defense have traditionally played an active role in selecting names for aircraft carriers. Thus, the final decision will likely be made by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegset in conjunction with Acting Chief of Naval Operations Hung Kao.
