Former South African world boxing champion Zolani Tete was shot and killed near his home in Mdantsane, according to radio station SABC. He was 38 years old.
Tete was returning from a training session and had stopped at the gate to his home. At that moment, two armed men wearing balaclavas ran up to his car and opened fire. The boxer died at the scene. A woman who was with him sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was hospitalized. Police have launched a manhunt for the attackers and are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
Tete was the IBF world champion in the second-lightest weight class from 2014 to 2015, and from 2017 to 2019 he was the WBO champion in the lightest weight class. In 2017, he set a Guinness World Record by knocking out Siboniso Gonyu in 11 seconds in a title fight.
In 2022, following his victory over Jason Cunningham, Tete failed a doping test and received a four-year suspension, which ended in July 2026. In recent months, the boxer has been preparing to return to the professional ring.
